Re: What is this switch?

Well that's what I thought, especially as the bit left in the gearbox has no electrical feed to it at the moment. How the hell can it stop the engine?

What is this switch?

Whilst under my van, checking for clutch fluid leaks, I found a wiring connector hanging down on the nearside (passenger side) of the gearbox. The connector had not come disconnected in the normal way but it appears that the switch part has corroded off and is still connected to the wiring. The rema...

Re: Lost my brakes!

Thanks Kev. Did not know it was a shared reservoir. I'll top it up and check the clutch hydraulics.

Lost my brakes!

Hello all. I've not been on here in ages but my 1.9 DG Caravelle has been off the road now for about 4 years due to a corrosion problem that I hadn't got the time or inclination to sort out. I knew it would fail the next MOT and I had access to another vehicle so I just SORNed it. I have been starti...

Re: Clutch bites very early.

Hi Phil, I've tried bleeding to no avail. There's no air in the system. I admit, I haven't done a comparison between pedal and slave in respect of where,on the pedal travel, the slave starts to move. I'll have to remove some trim and access the pedal-to-pushrod Clevis pin joint and check for wear. I...

Clutch bites very early.

The clutch on my 1.9 DG bites very close to the floor. This doesn't suggest to me that it's worn out, as I would expect it to bite very late and be slippy if that were the case. It rather suggests insufficient clutch travel. There appears to be no adjustment on the slave cylinder pushrod but I can't...

Re: 1.9 DG Starting problem

Well, after exhaustive wiring and connections testing for both voltage and resistance, I came to the conclusion that the starter motor was faulty. I was reluctant to come to this decision because I've had it looked at twice now by a retired auto electrician. But, faulty it was. Bit the bullet and bo...

Aaaah. That's what it's for. Excellent. Thanks very much bigherb.
Must be the starter motor itself then! Bugger!

What is this relay for? 1.9 DG Caravelle 1987.

I'm currently having starter problems, in that it does not turn, or even click. Many checks have been carried out in respect of earths and feed voltages and all seem to be ok. Is there a starter relay anywhere in the circuit that may have failed and if so, where is it? There is a relay in a black bo...

Re: 1.9 DG Starting problem

Thanks Phil,

I'll have a look around myself as well and maybe try some direct battery connection to the starter with it in place on the car, using jump leads. I could have a fire on my hands before you know it!

Re: 1.9 DG Starting problem

OK Phil. Tried the wiggle test to no avail. Not a flicker I'm afraid. Thinking a bit harder, I can't lose the permanent feed to the solenoid because it is just that; permanent. What's the relay inside that black box in the engine bay (nearside front corner of the engine bay)? Starter motor relay per...

Re: 1.9 DG Starting problem

Hi again Phil. Just noticed your location. I've just updated my profile to show my new location since May 2009 (that's how long it's been since I was last on this forum). I'm just 'up the road' from you!

Re: 1.9 DG Starting problem

Oh yeah, I'm sure it's electrical. Although I did toy with the idea that the new pinion bush might be an excessively snug fit round the pinion shaft, but it would have to be damn tight to stop the motor from turning and the solenoid would still operate, which it doesn't. And no, I haven't added any ...

1.9 DG Starting problem

The starter motor on my 1.9 DG engined '87 Caravelle will not turn. Won't even try. It has similar symptoms to other starting faults on this forum, in that it turns over and starts very well one moment, then absolutely nothing the next time. The actual failure mode was; switched off, emptied all the...

Re: Silencer question

Don't buy an EMPI twin quiet pack exhaust (assuming that you are looking to fit a new exhaust), they are indeed s**t, as I have been told on this very forum but only after I had bought &fitted one (my fault for not asking first). The paint burns off VERY quickly and is instantly replaced by rust...
