I always book with speed ferries as a normal car, IIRC there limit is actually 1.85M, But I drive a caravelle, so marginal at 1.9M.... I was going to try with my syncro doka, but that is a bit higher, so I am sure would raise a Q

What does there spec say?

most tin tops 2wd will be about 1.9-1.95M

If you can be bothered, print out the spec sheets for a couple of the bigger people-carrier things. Just as long and wide and heavy, nearly as high. Ask them if people-carriers are defined as cars or vans; when they say 'cars', thrust your evidence in their face and drive on the boat.

Wightlink ferries currently charge £29 each way 'night flyer' (booked for after 10pm) for ANY T25 from Lymington to Yarmouth - be it a tin top, high top, pop top. The High Top Transit also went through at the same 'car' rate, and it's a little bigger/taller than a T25.

We managed to sneak on the 8.15pm ferry going there, and also an earlier one coming back - it's always worth trying earlier to see if they've any spaces...... :D

What about Dover to Calais or Holyhead to Dublin?

when booking just tell them its a transporter(car derived van) is the terminology they use, give them the length and width and YOU WILL PAY CAR RATES, whether you go to dublin or timbuktu.

I suppose if you just tell them either by phone or internet that it is a car they will sell you car tickets and if they quibble at the actual ferry what's the worse they can do? Make you pay the extra?

On a slightly different tack, going across the Severn Bridge to Wales a couple of months ago I was charged as a van and had to pay an extra four quid, I think. When I complained she said campers go at car rates but I had stripped the inside of mine and only had a portable cooker. I had the mattress on the floor with my duvet but still she insisted it was not a camper!!!
Has this happened to anybody else?

Not veering off topic or nuffin, but the policy at Glastonbury Festival (if you want to get into the camper van fields) is that it must have a cooker and a plumbed-in sink.

Take the registration document, if that says caravanette on it?

Yeah, I got fleeced on the M6 toll and had to pay the £7 a van pays, and not the £3.50 that all the Range Rovers and people carriers were paying. And it's a Westy Pop Top camper.I'm not tight,it's just the principle of it.One road I won't be using again.
